Two of the identity products of Vilanova de Arousa are mussels and cockles. Their cultivation and gathering, respectively, have been carried out by several generations of Vilanova men and women who have learned from the teachings of their ancestors.
As far as mussels are concerned, Vilanova stands out for having been the first town in whose waters – from the Ría de Arousa – the first raft was installed. On the other hand, cockle gathering is characterized by being an eminently artisanal work.
Both mussels and cockles are two ideal foods to include in a healthy and balanced diet. In gastronomy, they are also very versatile, being able to be included in different recipes, from the simplest preparations (steamed or in vinaigrette) to more complete ones (such as Galician pies called “empanadas” or paellas).
Delicious preparations that you can taste at the Mussel and Cockle Festival in Vilanova de Arousa!
